Vietnam 1970. Nhiem is a 19-year-old film student, when he is forced to leave his studies and join the Vietnam War: during the Tet Offensive, at the Ho- Chi-Minh trail and many other locations, he experiences the full extent and the sufferings of war; with courage and an eye for the right images, Nhiem eventually becomes a front cameraman of the Việt cộng.
Hannah, a journalist from the Netherlands joins the close-knit community of the international press and her husband, a photographer, in Saigon with her two small children. She is just as determined and hungry for a good story but more compassionate than some of her male colleagues who are shielding themselves with cynicism and intoxication.
Nhiem is a fresh take on the Vietnam War – told from the Vietnamese and the European perspective rather than exclusively from the American and with subject matters and a richness of details unprecedented in previous films/series about the Vietnam War. NHIEM is also a film about the power of images, their use as a weapon within the framework of wartime conflicts as well as a statement about their makers‘ dilemma when it comes to who is responsible.
